Quick and Easy Jamaican Jerk Sauce
With summer coming to an end, there are a few more recipes you may want to make that’ll give you your last taste of fresh tropical fruits and spices. One sauce, that is a staple in summer recipes, but can also be used year round, is Jamaican jerk sauce! Jerk sauce is both sweet and spicy and pairs amazing with meats like pork and chicken, as well as vegetarian options, like beans and rice. Jerk sauce also tastes great with fruit salsas, a combination that really adds flavor to your meal. I personally love using Jamaican jerk sauce to make jerk chicken or put it in a burrito, like my Island Burrito. As long as everyone in your family likes spicy food, then this sauce is bound to be part of your weekly dinners.
the details of jerk sauce
Sweet and spicy is a classic flavor combination. When it comes to Jamaican jerk sauce, there is no counting out the fact that your taste buds will encounter both sweet notes of brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, as well as spicy notes of pepper, like a scotch bonnet or habanero pepper. The three sweet ingredients are staples in dessert, like apple pie, which is extra sweet for something like a savory dish, but it perfectly counters the heat of the habanero pepper, which is close to the top third of the Scoville Scale (that’s spicy!!!).
As for the rest of the sauce, garlic, thyme, and allspice are key to making the recipe more authentic. Specifically, allspice is important, as it is a staple in many Caribbean dishes, and provides a fragrant, peppery flavor to both sweet and savory dishes, like jerk sauce.
