Homemade SuperPretzel Soft Pretzel Nuggets
Day 6 of my 12 Days of Super Bowl Recipes is a nostalgic one. Growing up, we always had SuperPretzel Soft Pretzels in our house. Whether they were full pretzels or pretzel nuggets, we had them. While I am still a huge fan of soft pretzels and occasionally go to my local soft pretzel factory, I had to make my own pretzel nuggets to see how easy it is. My Homemade SuperPretzel Soft Pretzel Nuggets have less than five ingredients in them and are quite simple. The only thing that takes some time is the dough rising and that’s only an hour. These pretzel nuggets are a perfect Super Bowl snack. Just make the dough and let it rise as you make another appetizer.
the details of the pretzel nuggets
These pretzel nuggets are oh so yummy! The outside of the nugget is tough, kind of crispy, just the way I like it. As for the inside, it is fluffy and dough-y, which is absolutely delicious. When it comes to the texture of the pretzel nuggets, specially the “crust,” the amount of time the dough spends boiling affects the amount of chewiness. Specifically, I suggest putting the dough in boiling water for 10 seconds. If you go above this, the pretzels will still taste fine, but they will be extra chewy which could be undesirable for you and some of your guests.
As silly as it sounds, the salt used for these pretzels is very important — it has to be coarse!! I suggest using kosher salt or sea salt. Both salts are coarse and stick well to the pretzels. I would avoid using table salt or even fine sea salt, as the salt won’t stick as well and it won’t be as flavorful.
If you’d like to try making normal soft pretzels, you can use this dough and just follow a simple method to twist the pretzels.
If you want to spice things up, you can forget the salt and make these pretzels flavored! Specifically, you can make cinnamon sugar soft pretzels by putting the nuggets in melted butter, then coating them in a cinnamon sugar mixture. You can also create a more savory pretzel, by taking a classic garlic ranch pretzel recipe and applying it to these soft pretzels. I’ve never tried it, but I imagine it would turn out well!
As for what to dip these pretzel nuggets with, there are tons of options! You can keep things classic and dip the pretzels in mustard or you can get a little fancy and dip them in my homemade beer cheese. You can also use dessert dips, like chocolate hummus, cream cheese icing, or a cinnamon sugar dip.

- 1/2 c baking soda
- coarse salt sea salt or kosher
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine water, flour, brown sugar and yeast.

- Preheat the oven to 425. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
- Once the dough rises, turn it onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into eighths. Roll each section into a rope. Cut the rope into 1-2 inch nuggets.

- Grease two baking sheets. Spread the nuggets across the baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Lightly brush each pretzel with water and sprinkle with salt. Serve warm and with your favorite dip!
