Happy National Doughnut Day!
Today is a special day. Unlike other days, June 5th is set aside to honor the best breakfast food/sweet treat around—the doughnut. The doughnut is not only special because of the delicious flavor it provides, but it is also well loved due to the many varieties there are. From light and airy yeast doughnuts to dense cake doughnuts, there is no going wrong and a texture for everyone to love.
My love for doughnuts started when I was young. Not only did I always get a strawberry doughnut on Sundays, but you’d find me eating pop’ems chocolate doughnut holes for breakfast every day. Nothing else, except maybe a Tastykake or the occasional cereal, was acceptable.
Fast forward to my freshman year of high school when my fellow track teammates and I would go to Dunkin multiple days a week after practice. We basically had donuts as our appetizer for dinner. While I stopped eating pop’ems for breakfast at this point my love for doughnuts was still evident and not leaving. Whenever we went down the shore for vacation I had to get Browns Donuts and I still do. Another doughnut shop I always go to on vacation is Krispy Kreme. Since they are all over the south I always make an effort to go there when I’m in the Carolinas. From their decadent cake batter to the hot and fluffy original glaze they have it all.
While during the above times I still had a love for doughnuts, my obsession from elementary school did not resurface until I met my boyfriend and fellow doughnut lover Carter. Thanks to Carter having a doughnut obsession, I could easily hop back on the doughnut train and create a whole new love for the delicious treat. The two of us go around finding the best doughnuts and rating them. While we haven’t really gone away from the east coast, we have had our fair share of doughnuts and have found some pretty amazing ones. From big shops like Krispy Kreme to small ones like Better Maid, there are so many good doughnuts that our fellow doughnut lovers need to try. To help you better understand how good there are I have explained our doughnut ratings below.
Browns Donuts - OCNJ 8.3/10
The best apple cider doughnuts I’ve ever had and one of the best doughnuts in general. Hot off the doughnut machine and coated in your choice of glaze they melt in your mouth and leave your coming back for more. These doughnuts are so good that I, someone who is not a big fan of honey, LOVES the honey doughnut.
To quote Carter “honey is like your mom when you go to a new friends house, she tells you to just be yourself, 8.2/10”
Better Maid Donuts - Pittsburgh, PA 8.2/10
A cute little doughnut shop in Pittsburgh that you would never know exists if the sign wasn’t put out front. Better Maid excels in cake doughnuts. Their blueberry cake is literally out of this world. It tasted so fresh and leaves me trying to find one just as good on the other side of PA. If you’re ever in the area go to Crafton early in the morning for a hot doughnut. You will not be disappointed.
Beilers Donuts - Lancaster/Philadelphia PA 8.2/10
Beilers has multiple locations but the one I have been to is at the Reading Terminal Market. Made fresh in the morning, Beilers has a wide variety of doughnut flavors. From maple bacon to chocolate peanut butter, they really know how to make a cream filled doughnut that combines classic flavors and makes your taste buds scream!
Sunnyside Pastries - East Earl, PA 7.2/10
Best on Tuesday mornings, Sunnyside is an Amish bakery that makes a variety of things but the one thing they do best is doughnuts. Just like Better Maid, Sunnyside has a blueberry cake doughnut that is super fresh. I’d rate it the highest of any doughnut I’ve had there, although it doesn’t reach Better Maid’s level, leaving it at a good second place.
Yum Yum Bake Shop - Warminster, PA 7.1/10
Known for their monster and big kahuna doughnuts, Yum Yum is the place to go if you want a big yeast doughnut. These doughnuts are a little more dense than Krispy Kreme and Dunkin, but they’re still high on our list as its fun to get a doughnut that feeds 6 or 12 people plus they have tons of other fun varieties like chocolate thunder for my fellow chocolate lovers. You can also personalize the large doughnuts which is great for birthdays or maybe just every day, cause why not?!?
Just Good Donuts - Pittsburgh, PA 6.7/10
The best filled doughnuts we’ve had in Pittsburgh, Just Good is in a small fish and chips pub selling doughnuts on the counter. From cookies and creme to chocolate peanut butter, Just Good fills their doughnuts to the brim and decks them out with all the good stuff. If you want a less traditional but delicious treat these doughnuts are for you.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts - Nationwide 7.6/10
Finally the best doughnut chain around, Krispy Kreme has a special place in my heart. You can’t beat the double dozens or the smell that hits your nose as soon as you enter the shop. Cake batter is like funfetti cupcakes in doughnut form and is honestly better than the cupcake itself. The hot glaze is so light and fluffy that it melts in your mouth and gives you no need to go with a special flavor. Overall, their doughnuts are much lighter than Dunkins and have a better glaze that knocks them out of the park. If you haven’t already, you need to get yourself to the closest Krispy Kreme to find out what you are missing.
If you have a favorite doughnut, please comment where it is from below! Traveling around for doughnuts is one of my and Carter’s favorite activities. Also, treat every day like doughnut day. These sweet treats deserved to be put on a pedestal 😉
